2011 Annual Appeal

Dear Friend of Waterfall Arts,

On a recent evening, seventy-five fascinated people filled our Clifford Gallery, surrounded by the exquisite photographs in Koichiro Kurita’s exhibit, ‘Meditations on Thoreau’, as Penobscot Nation historian, James Francis, related the story of Thoreau’s three Maine expeditions and his Penobscot guides. James expanded our understanding of his people, their history and language, and how closely-knit all these were to the land.

I was struck by James’s insight that no matter how far into the wilderness they traveled, Thoreau’s guide, Joe Polis, felt thoroughly at home, so deeply was his life immersed in the place he lived. It was a remarkable evening, bridging three cultures and strengthening community in an experience of learning and art.

Over the last twelve years, Waterfall Arts has provided this community with so many experiences

of community enrichment and inspiration through our unique and cutting-edge programs, which often take us to new and wild creative spaces and allow us to feel at home in our imaginations.

2011 has been a notable year of achievement in building community, programs and more efficient operations for Waterfall Arts. Our excellent staff and Board have become a smoothly operating team, working together to make it all happen.

Our three summer exhibits logged best-ever attendance and statewide praise. “Outstanding, exquisite, extraordinary work!” are some of the visitor responses. Perhaps a Quebecois said it best, “C’est merveilleux!”

Your contributions have provided and will provide the critical energy to make sure all these valuable programs continue, and we thank you so much!

Events and programs of this quality don’t just happen. Every class, exhibit, event and public art initiative is the product of hours of careful planning, communication and organization. We bring you a wealth of creativity, inspiration and art in all media, and we do it for you, our community.

Actually, we can’t do it without you. You are the critical ingredient.

Whatever amount you have given in the past, you have been generous to do so, and we thank you for your open heartedness.

Please consider a generous contribution this year, in whatever amount you are comfortable with. If you’ve never supported Waterfall Arts, we hope this is the year you will begin, and join us as part of this growing community of creative energy. Feel the power of ART!

Thank you for your support and we wish you great good cheer for the season,

Alan Crichton
Board President and Founder
