Moving sculptures by internationally acclaimed artist Arthur Ganson will be exhibited at Waterfall Arts from June 3 through July 29.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm, Saturday from 1 to 5 pm and by appointment.

Ganson, a TED talk presenter, has exhibited internationally and has a permanent revolving display at MIT in Boston. Creating kinetic sculptures for over 30 years, he started making his work move because he found he was “most interested in the state of becoming.” His machines have been featured in such diverse settings as the Long Now Foundation seminars, the band Dead Man’s Bones music video, and the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg, Germany. Ganson says that he starts with some idea from deep inside himself, and then “wrestles the idea or question into physicality.”

On display will be twelve examples of his beautifully unique, masterfully engineered sculpture machines that offer philosophical and mechanical questions for viewers of all ages. Some are interactive, others are meant to be watched and pondered as they repeat their movements. Ganson's work incorporates handmade gears, pulleys and motors plus disparate items like chairs, feathers, paper, violins and dolls into whirring and moving sculptures which spark the imagination, tell humorous stories and display scientific principles -- all at the same time. His website, www.arthurganson.com, features videos of many of the machines in action.

Waterfall Arts is excited to host this family-friendly exhibit of the marriage between mechanical design and contemporary artistic expression. Activities related to the exhibit are an artist talk by Ganson on Thursday July 28th at 7pm and workshops in making kinetic sculptures with Belfast artist Wes Reddick. He will lead “Purposeful Purposelessness”, a one day workshop for ages 12 through adult on Saturday, June 25 from 9am to 3pm. Another class, “Shoe Box Kinetics” will meet from 6 to 9pm Wednesday evenings, July 20, 27 and August 3 and 10.

In addition, groups of local students are scheduled to tour the exhibit during June.

This unique opportunity to experience Ganson’s hand made machines up close was made possible with the support of Rockport Mechanical and ReVision Energy. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm, Saturday from 1 to 5 pm and by appointment. For more information call 207.338.2222.
