Art classes for kids are starting up again at Waterfall Arts, leading off with School Vacation Art Camp for kids 8 to 12. The theme for the week is “Exploring Pointillism”, a technique invented and used by the French Impressionist painter Georges Seurat. Lesia Sochor, the art camp’s experienced teacher says she’ll use Seurat’s paintings to encourage the group to make paintings in the pointillist style, as well as creating a communal mural and adds that “We'll have to make some interesting brushes to help us explore the world of painting dots!” The camp runs during school vacation week, Monday through Friday, February 21 to 25, from 9 am to 12 noon. Daily outdoor breaks are scheduled everyday. Enrollment is limited to eight students. Tuition is $90 for the week (additional sibling $80) All materials included.
Linda Stec resumes leading the ever popular “Wonders of Clay” class for kids five to eighteen on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. The eight week class begins February 23rd and ends April 13th. Under Linda’s exceptional guidance, the group will learn to make vessels on a wheel, build sculptures by hand and how to fire, glaze and finish their pieces. There will be time to experiment, collaborate and create. Returning students and newcomers are welcome to be part of this creative, cooperative, clay community for kids. Tuition is $170 (additional sibling $150). All materials provided; limited scholarship assistance available

Searsport High School and Middle School held a Art Fun Day on Thursday Dec. 16 - I brought some materials from Waterfall Arts - a painting done by a young artist/professional artist team, a slide show, photographs, a mysterious wooden foundry pattern, paper and pencils. While we talked about making art, art + nature, eco-artists, who's a good drawer and classes and events here, I asked the students to draw an image of moving water - abstract, surreal or representational. Some of them are posted above. I was impressed with their enthusiasm for drawing and we all had a good time. The event happened in the school library which was filled with some very good art work done by teachers and students. That impressed me too. Thanks to Jeff Shula and Ron Bisbee for inviting Waterfall Arts to participate!

July and August - 9 weeks/62 days/1488 hours of the best summer we've had in years. Plenty of swimming, gardening, art making, visiting, barbeques and events everywhere with music and performances. I wish it wouldn't end, but then there's September, with its own brand of lovliness.. Waterfall Arts has had a busy summer too - eco-motion sculptures on the streets of Belfast, outside movies shown on the wall, art openings, classes in Montville, classes in Belfast, gallery visitors, fundraisers, board meetings, our 10th Summer Celebration of the Arts and planning our upcoming programs. Stay tuned for news - in the meantime, make art, relax and have fun!

Jessica Porter wrote this about her art students - "This Spring some 4th and 5th grade art students from Captain Albert Stevens Elementary School went on a trip to the Belfast High School art wing. They met with Chuck Hamm's portfolio class, where the high school students helped the younger artists make plaster molds of their faces and Mr Hamm demonstrated different building and molding techniques. The students then started working on their own unique sculptural masks. After many hours of creating back in their home art room, the young artists are excited to show off their work in a show at Waterfall Arts' Fall Out Shelter Gallery. The CASS students are Malcolm Dunson-Todd, Hayden Wick, Katy King, Gerard Coward, Austin Merando, Zander Roman, John Golgano, James Cole, Terrianne Clark, Konnor Harford, McKenna Sullivan, Callie Cook, David Tinder and Eliot Ripley."
These masks are really fun and some are scary!
