Complete List of Summer Classes for Adults, Teens and Kids. Classes and workshops take place in both Belfast and Montville.All classes are also listed seperately on the calendar. Clay Vessels with Russell Kahn
July 19 – 30   MWFTTH 9 AM – 3 PM  Ages: 8 – 12    WA-Belfast  $150   materials fee $15
Have you ever taken a pottery/clay class and did not get to finish your piece?  This class is for you! We will meet every other day for two weeks so pieces can dry, be bisqued (first firing), and finally glazed in time to take home.  We will cover beginning throwing techniques, with the adventurous learning to make clay vessels: cups, mugs, bowls, plates and vases.  We’ll do some handbuilding, too.  First week: M W F  Second week: T TH

Now, Look Here! Art Discovery with Nancy Glassman
July 19 – 23  M- F, 10 – noon  Ages 5-7   WA-Belfast   $60  materials fee $5
Fun, developmentally appropriate projects abound here to stimulate young minds and satisfy tactile sensibilities.  Children will be free to work at their own pace on 2-D and 3-D projects -- some decide to build as high as their heads, or display astonishing design sense. Your child can join us for a busy investigation of art processes and materials, as we construct Trees of Life, make Fantasy Insects, and more.

Music and Mayhem! with Tucker Daniels
July 26 – 30  M-F 10-noon  Ages 5-7    WA-Belfast   $60
Tucker's class will offer a crazy mix of music and mayhem!    We will focus on learning many songs from silly to serious with the goal of polishing one song a day for a week's end performance.    Each day will be a mix of music time and guided play.   From hunts and mysteries to relay races and group building activities, Tucker has a wealth of goodies up his sleeve!

Song, Rhythm, and Dance Plus More! with Lisa Newcomb and Jeff Densmore
August 2- 6  M-F  10 – noon  Ages 6-8   WA-Montville  $100
Come play! Songs, clapping games, simple dances, movement games, hula hoops balance beam, ring toss games. Try new skills, make up dances, be a part of a tribe!

Sculpture Across the Universe with Russell Kahn
Aug 2-6  M-F 9 AM – 3 PM  Ages 8-12   WA Montville  $150 materials fee $15
Do you love to build things up, down and around??  Come and join this sculpture class where we’ll explore many materials, including: wire, clay, plaster, paper mache’, wood, and found objects from nature.  We will also look at the work of Master Sculptors from around the world. You will be able to create many things to adorn your parents’ living room and garden.

Intro to Torchwork : Soft Glass Beads with Suzanne Southworth
August 2-6  M-F  9am-12pm  Age 12 – adult   WA Montville  $150  materials included.
A great introduction to torchworking glass rods into beads and small sculptures. Hours fly by in focused creation, full of rich color and fascinating techniques to make pendants, bracelets, rings, necklaces and fish, even spectacular planets. The emphasis will be on developing familiarity with glass and individual creativity.

The Natural Art Explorer Brigade with Nancy Glassman
Aug 9-13       M-F  10 AM – noon  Ages 5-7   WA Montville  $60   materials fee $5
We will explore the natural world of Kingdom Falls with a combination of natural finds and art materials.  We will draw, paint, print and construct in celebration of the life around us. Water pebbles, dragonflies, feathers, flowers and ferns, all that we see and find will be grist for our artistic mill, as we create “Life of the Stream,”  “Plant a Forest” and more. Children will be able to work at their own pace for all open-ended activities.

Dance and Paint the Waterfall with Jeni Frazee and Tricia Moran
August 9-13   M-F  10 AM -2 PM    Ages 8-12   WA Montville  $165 materials fee $10
Come create dance and watercolor art at the waterfall!  Young artists will use two different art forms – dance and watercolor painting – to explore and express their experience of the beautiful natural site of Kingdom Falls. We’ll enjoy the surroundings by looking, noticing, talking, moving and painting. Movement and watercolor techniques will be introduced throughout the week. We’ll end with a performance and exhibit on Saturday, 8/14 at Waterfall Art’s Summer Sonic Tonic.

Introduction to Documentary Filmmaking with Nicolle Littrell Co-Sponsored by UMaine Hutchinson Center www.hutchinsoncenter.umaine.edu/

WA-Belfast and UMaine Hutchinson   $250   mtls fee $15
Bring your movie ideas and learn the fundamentals of documentary film production, post-production and distribution to create your own short documentary film.  We will look at different styles, genres and basic theories of documentary film production.  Coursework will focus on:  effective use of the video camera, the interview process, editing footage with iMovie, and adding music and voice-over.  Public Screening July 31.
Note:
Students will need access to either a portable harddrive or laptop (preferably a Mac), and access to some sort of video device: video camera, or digital still camera or cell phone with video capability.  Video cameras can be provided for an additional $50 fee.

Clay Garden Sculptures with Randy Fein
July 19-21 & Aug 6  MTW; F   6-8:30 PM  Ages 14-adult
WA – Belfast $145  materials fee $15
Clay Sculptor Randy Fein will teach hand building techniques necessary to construct a remarkable ornamental terra-cotta sculpture. Working large will be encouraged and the imaginative objects made during this class will be true conversation pieces. We will meet three evenings the first week, then let pieces dry and get bisqued and meet the following Friday evening.  No experience necessary.

Portable Fresco with Barbara Sullivan
July 19-21  M-W 9 – 4  Age 16-Adult
WA-Belfast  $135  materials fee $35
When we think of fresco painting we often think of very old large public murals. We will focus on making contemporary portable fresco panels. Participants will learn the techniques of this age-old medium, as they make substrates of wood and lathe, grind pigments and paint true buon fresco on freshly laid wet plaster. The application of fresco as a medium on both traditional and unusual surfaces will allow for individual fresh takes on this revered medium

Paste Paper and Gelatin Prints with Laurie Adams
July 24  Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM  Age 14 - adult
WA Belfast   $50  materials fee $10
Colorful and deceptively simple to do, paste paper has been made for over 400 years and has many uses– collage, cards, wrapping paper, book covers, etc. Combs, brushes, fingers create patterns on paper coated with a mixture of paint and glue. Think of it as grownup finger painting with sophisticated and beautiful results. After lunch, we’ll make painterly gelatin monotypes, which lend themselves to extensive experimentation. The gelatin base is coated with water-soluble inks and paints, then leaves, torn or cut paper and other images are laid on the plate and printed by hand rubbing. Multiple layers and textures can be built up, making wonderfully complex, richly colored prints.

Introduction to Timber Framing with Raivo Vihman
July 26 – 30  M-F 9 – 4  Age 18-Adult

Get ready to cut a frame! This will be a five-day introduction to the craft of timber framing in which we will build and erect a small timbered outbuilding to house a handmade cob oven. Students will develop an understanding of the structural parts of a frame, and build confidence with the layout and execution of timber joinery, walking away with the skills to build their own structure.

Waterscapes: Introduction to Watercolor with Lesia Sochor
July 26-30   M-F 1 – 4 PM   Age 14 – adult
WA-Belfast  $90 materials list will be provided
Explore the versatile medium of watercolor and its multitude of applications. We’ll start with the basics of washes, gradations of tone and mixing colors, moving onto transparencies, how pigments react with different amounts of water and wet and dry brush techniques. Begin or broaden your watercolor experience in this fun class.

Strappo Technique with Harold Garde
July 28-30  W-F  9am – noon  Age 18-Adult
WA Belfast  $180 materials fee $15
Strappo is a dry image transfer process, requiring no press or special equipment, that Harold Garde has developed, named and taught throughout the United States. It is a unique print method using paint on glass for creating transfer images which can stand alone or enhance art work in various ways. The strappo technique has been recognized as a specific printmaking monotype procedure by the New York Metropolitan Museum, and a sample of the strappo image is in their print library collection.

Raku: Ancient Art in a Modern Setting with Linda Stec
July 31 – Aug 1 Sat and Sun 10am-4pm both days   Age 14 – adult
WA Belfast $85  materials fee $15
Traditional technique of tea ceremony vessels, raku is the art of fast firing glazed pots outdoors, removing them from the kiln while the glaze is molten and plunging them into combustibles like sawdust, leaves or newspaper to further embellish the surface. Each piece is spontaneous, unpredictable and unique.

Plein Air Painting with Adele Drake
August 2 – 6   M-F, 9am-1pm  Age 14 – adult
WA Montville  $120  materials list will be provided
We will always work from direct observation, either outdoors or a landscape of studio objects. Lots of one on one feedback from the instructor plus time to learn from the other participants through informal interactions and group critique format. The emphasis will be on expanding visual vocabulary, taking risks and trying something new.  Come prepared to paint a series and to teach others as you actively learn.

Basic Glass Fusing with Alyssa Oxley
Aug 2-6  M-F  10-4  Age 14 - adult
WA Montville   $175; materials fee $35
Learn the ancient art of fusing glass to easily create beautiful tiles, mirrors, and frames, progressing to a plate or bowl.  We will first learn to cut glass. We then arrange these pieces of opaque and transparent colored glass to form a design and place it in a kiln to fuse together.  We will look at various techniques to achieve a range of effects.  Come with your sketches or we will explore new ideas. Advanced students will benefit as well.

Building a Cob Oven with Nick Jackson
August 4-7  W – Sat, 9am – 4pm   Age 14 – adult

This workshop will be an introductory level natural building class.  It will cover a brief look at the history of building with clay, sand and straw and the technical basics for mixing your own earthen materials.  We will work together to design a beautiful cob oven on the Waterfall Arts Montville campus.

ART HOPE with Laura Jaquays
August 7 Saturday 10am – 3pm  Age 18 - Adult

Art HOPE teaches how creativity can enhance our well-being and be a "Healing Opportunity for People Everyday." Explore this simple idea using basic art mediums in both independent and group art-making activities. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Waterfall Arts, participants will retreat to discover their unique creative gifts.

Join accomplished Boston architect Richard Tremaglio in designing your own “GREEN” 300 sq foot studio or guest house. Learn hands-on applications to individualize your backyard getaway with a heightened environmental consciousness using site, story and structure.

The Nude in the Woods: Life Drawing in Nature with Kris Engman
August 9-13  M-F 1 – 4 PM  Age 18-Adult

Study the figure in a unique outdoor setting. With trees, moss, rocks, and waterfalls as the backdrop, this class will study the nude with natural lighting in various outdoor environments. An anatomy component will be infused into the drawing experience. Various materials will be used.

Torchwork: Hard Glass Sculpture and Beads with Marta Bernbaum
August  9 – 13  M- F 10 AM – 3 PM  Ages 14 –adult

In this class for all skill levels, we’ll explore the magic, excitement and alchemy of borosilicate glass, which changes color amazingly as it heats and cools. Under the experienced direction of this lively instructor, we’ll make beautiful beads, pendants, small sculptures, and even blown vessels.

Life Art: Return of the Natives, Community Project with Joline Blais

This hand-on workshop reconnects Art with Nature by developing new skills to work with the elements. Using earth, air, fire, water, permaculture design, indigenous ceremony, and digital network culture, we’ll create art that nourishes and sustains life: Life Art. Observe/Listen, Discern/Create Patterns, Intervene/Interact - connect your deep inner voice to the creative forces in the Web of Life and create a New Commons at the Falls.
