Residencies

Throughout the year Waterfall Arts invites special guest artists to serve as an Artist-in-Residence in its mission-based Artists/Nature/Community program. Residencies vary in length and each includes a teaching, exhibition and community presentation component.

BRANCHING OUT: TAKING WING
MARCH 5 - April 23, 2010

The fourth annual Branching Out Mentoring Project exhibition opened on Friday March 5 at Waterfall Arts’ Clifford Gallery. Young artists and their artist mentors worked together using photography, video, clay, painting, drawing, sculpture and fiber arts to create work on this year’s theme - “Taking Wing.” . The mentors worked with the young artists in their chosen discipline, providing some direction, collaboration, technical expertise and advice and encouragement.

This year’s young artist-mentor pairs are Seth Whited and Emma Bonneville, Kenny Cole and Lizzie Cox, Josh Povec and Emma Hamm, Katie Wadsworth and Chelsea Porter, Dan Clarke and Hila Shooter, Chuck Hamm and Rachael Kahn, Karen Jelenfy and Katie Wollfrum, Petrea Noyes and Clayton Clemetson and Russell Kahn and Tom Young.

Each pair came up with different interpretations of the theme. Some focused on birds in flight, fabricating nests and illustrating avian predators, while other pairs were out at dawn shooting Belfast harbor and the horizon in 360 degrees. The resulting exhibit, on display through April 23rd, promises to be fresh and exciting.

Earth Week Residency
Past earth week residency leaders include artists Abby Sadauckas in 2007 and Blake Hendrickson in 2008. In 2009, artist Mark Kelly worked with Waldo County Technical Center and home-schooled students to create sculpture out of found objects. Earth week residency for 2010 is on hold and may return at a later time.

Summer Residency
In 2009, during the  "Desire Lines" project, Nancy Manter and a group of enthusiastic volunteers spent time making large drawings in mudflats and beaches and on rocks, photographed them, had a lot of fun and later put together a collaborative piece reflecting their experiences.
