ARTISTS' LECTURE SERIES

The Artists’ Lecture series was created in 2003 to provide a forum for both well-known and emerging artists and writers to present their work to the community and lead audience members in open discussion about their inspiration and the creative process. The series has traditionally been held during the summer in Montville, but the Arts Center’s new building in Belfast allows the series to continue through the fall and winter.

Next Scheduled Lecture in Belfast:
Monday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m.
Women? In the Arts? presented by Kris Engman

Ongoing Gallery Exhibit through January
”Branching Out: Trees ” Collaborative Exhibit

The current exhibit at Waterfall Arts in Belfast is “Branching Out:Trees”, which features artwork by local artists and their young collaborators. Using arbor vitae seedlings as a starting point, the artist pairs worked together to express the symbolic and real power of trees and evoke the spirit of the holiday season.  Participating artists are Marcie Bronstein, Kris Engman, Kenny Cole, Lee Silverton, Meredith Alex, Linda Stec and Mike Silverton.

In her book, “A Natural History of the Senses”, Diane Ackerman speaks eloquently of trees and branches: "Of the many ways to watch the sky, one of the most familiar is through the filigree limbs of a tree, or around and above trees... Trees conduct the eye from the ground up through the heavens; link the detailed temporaries of life with the bulging blue abstraction overhead.  In Norse legend, the huge ash tree Yggdrasil, with its great arching limbs and swarming roots, stretched high into the sky, holding the universe together, connecting earth to both heaven and hell. ...Trees offer us knowledge in ancient stories and legends, perhaps because they alone seem to unite the earth and the sky - connecting the known world with everything that is beyond our grasp and our power."
The exhibit, which will remain on view through the end of January, is located at 256 High Street, the former Gov. Anderson School. For more information, call 338-2222 or visit waterfallarts.org.
