Three times a year Waterfall Arts invites special guest artists to serve as an Artist-in-Residence in its mission-based Artists/Nature/Community program. Residencies vary in length, but each includes a teaching, exhibition and community presentation component. Spring. Summer, Fall/Winter, Belfast and Montville.

BRANCHING OUT 2010: TAKING WING
We are pleased to announce the 4 th annual Branching Out Residency Program. Waterfall Arts matches area youth with professional artists in their field of interest for a short-term mentoring program. This program culminates in a collaborative or side-by-side piece of artwork to be exhibited in our Clifford Gallery in Belfast March and April, 2010. Past work has included sculpture, photography, drawing, painting, mixed media and more.
Teams will work together to create art, inspiring each other in the process. In addition, each youth artist/mentor team will be invited to make a public presentation of their work to a school or community group. Students will gain invaluable experience in the creative collaborative process, hanging a show, and public speaking, all essential skills for any professional artist. A $100 honorarium will be given to each professional artist to cover supply costs.
This year’s residency focus, Taking Wing, offers a hopeful and action-based theme, reflecting the broad array of community responses to climate change, habitat preservation, and decreasing our dependency on fossil fuels. Art is a significant element in many of these responses. Also, this launching point for the artist/mentor pairs is embedded in our mission which is dedicated to creative engagement for a sustainable future.

Earth Week Residency

Past earth week residency leaders include artists Abby Sadauckas in 2007 and Blake Hendrickson in 2008. In 2009, artist Mark Kelly worked with Waldo County Technical Center and home-schooled students to create sculpture out of found objects. Earth week residency for 2010 is on hold and may return at a later time.

Summer
2009 Residency - with artist Nancy Manter
"Desire Lines"

Manter and a group of enthusiastic volunteers spent time making large drawings in mudflats and beaches and on rocks, photographed them, had a lot of fun and later put together a collaborative piece reflecting their experiences.
